This five-day certification program is designed for anyone who is interested in becoming a punch needle rug hooking instructor. There are very few punch needle teachers in the United States or abroad, and this is an excellent opportunity to get a good start in an exciting field. Amy Oxford, veteran rug hooking teacher, author, and inventor of the Oxford Punch Needles will cover all the topics necessary to give you the skills and confidence needed to be a successful rug hooking teacher. You will go home with a personal teaching plan to help you get started, learn where to teach, where to get supplies, how to write course descriptions, lesson plans, supply lists, contracts, and much more. Learn potential problems, pitfalls, and “tricks of the trade,” both for doing the craft itself, and passing it on. Students will have the chance to practice new teaching skills by giving each other private lessons and most importantly, will learn how to be the very best rug hookers that they can be so their students can learn by example. Many different techniques will be taught including the use of the Oxford "Fine Work" Punch Needle, shading, novelty yarns, strips of wool and cotton homespun fabric, yarn blending, basic traditional rug hooking, 3-dimensional rug hooking, and sculpting.
Students will begin a sampler in class that will illustrate these techniques and serve as an excellent teaching aid. Participants will be allowed to complete their sampler at home. Additional homework includes designing and punching a 2' x 3' rug. The deadline for completing these projects is December 31, 2010. Participants who successfully complete this course will be made Certified Oxford Instructors and will be provided with ongoing support and the benefits that come from being accredited by a respected pioneer in the field.
Prerequisite: students need to have completed one beginning and one intermediate class with Amy, or may enroll with permission of the instructor. No former teaching experience required. Please note that this is a demanding and intensive program where much is given but much is also required.
To register for the class, or for more information about Fletcher Farm School, please visit www.fletcherfarm.com, or call (802) 228-8770. If you have any questions about the program please contact Amy directly at amy@amyoxford.com.

She received her Oxford certification 25 years after first meeting Amy and being introduced to the marvelous Oxford Punch Needle tool. She is also a McGown Certified traditional rug hooker and teaches classes in both of these treasured textile traditions.
Maddy says:
I have had my wooden 'Knitting Nancy' since I was a child and I have to give her credit for all of my textile aspirations. 'Knitting Nancy' is a tool to make knit cording and was made in Germany. Newer versions are known as 'Strick Susel' or 'Strick Hannah.' ('Strick' means 'knitting' in Germanic languages.) I have honored her by hooking a version of her, and I have it hanging in my studio. The rug is bound with knit cording. Cording is coming out of the bottom of her and she is holding it in her hands (which are knit to wrap around it) and it turns into a flower.

I have always loved working with fibers, and punch needle rug hooking is my favorite way to use them. The rug’s design can be as creative and unique as I want it to be, and the process is very meditative. To top this all off, the final result is useful and appreciated! I enjoy sharing this craft with others.
