Nevada City School Children with their Rugs.
These students are in a multiage class for grades 1-3 and are 6-9 years old. Their teacher, Maria Dicintio, wrote to Amy Oxford at The Oxford Company saying, "We started this project because our class size grew from 12 to 18 students, but our meeting rug that we sit on together in a circle stayed the same size. The students were always struggling to fit on the carpet! I had recently begun punch needle rug hooking, and I thought it would be fun for each of us to make our own rug to sit on. I ordered monk's cloth and some economy needles. The students drew designs and transferred them. We were so excited to start our rugs, but the punches WOULD NOT work. I had ordered my own punch needle from you, so I decided to write and see if you would consider loaning us some. You quickly shipped us some #8 needles and we were off! Thank you so much for your generous loan and for the rug hooking book you sent to inspire us. When we took this picture my students were so excited to show 'Amy' the work they had done."
Note from Amy: Didn't they do a wonderful job?

Finishing was done by Mary Lynne Naples, and the Santa was made by Betty Clarkson. Betty is the owner of a shop in Lancaster Pennsylvania called Little Pine Traditional Crafts. Betty says about this piece, "This was made by the Tuesday group at Little Pines. I really enjoyed the dyeing of all the wool except the snow which was a textured wool. Santa's boots and mitts are some of my own handspun yarn. The coat trim is Australian possum, and the backpack is made of wool with deer hair."
Designed and punched by Cheryl Mazurek from Calgary, Alberta, Canada
This sampler was designed and punched by Cheryl Mazurek from Calgary, Alberta, Canada during a workshop with Amy Oxford in Calgary. The workshop explored how to get different textures by using unusual yarns. It was made with all 8 sizes of the Oxford Punch Needle and a variety of plain and fancy yarns as well as ribbons and wool fabric strips. A sampler is a great way to try out lots of different fibers and punch needles to find out what punch needle sizes and materials you prefer working with. The fringe on the bottom shows the fibers that Cheryl used in the piece.
