I teach at a variety of craft schools and “rug camps” across the country. In addition to this, I also offer private classes for groups of interested individuals, guilds, clubs, schools, and other organizations. Workshops for handspinners are also available. I travel nationwide and overseas to teach. I bring along my enthusiasm as well as dozens of examples of finished work, over 100 colors of hand-dyed 100% wool rug yarn, kits, patterns, rug backing, and other hard-to-find punch needle rug hooking supplies. A variety of courses are available for beginner to advanced students. Custom classes can be designed for you to meet your students' needs and your desired schedule. A slide show on the history of rug hooking is available featuring antique hooked rugs from the 1830s to the contemporary rugs of today. Teaching rates, sample course descriptions, and materials costs are available upon request.

Fletcher Farm School For the Arts and Crafts
Open Workshop, July, 2009. Ludlow, Vermont

There is no minimum number of students but the maximum number I take is 16. Any more than this and students would not receive enough individual attention. I have been teaching for over 20 years and pride myself on having successful students who enjoy learning the craft and actually even finish their rugs! Many of my students have gone on to make a career out of rug hooking.

Private punch needle rug hooking lessons are available by appointment in my Cornwall, Vermont home and studio. The cost is $30 per hour, or $25 per hour per person for small groups of 2-4 students. A three hour minimum lesson is recommended. Please call or e-mail for more details or to make an appointment.

Celebration Classes
One popular type of class that I offer is a “celebration class.” An example of a celebration class that I taught was a weekend party organized by a group of bridesmaids as a special day to spend with the bride. Each bridesmaid, the maid of honor, and the bride herself designed a 12” by 12” square ahead of time. I took their designs and arranged them to make a rug pattern. Each of their squares signified something special about their friendships. For example, the maid of honor and the bride went on vacation to Maine once so the maid of honor’s square was of a lobster! The friends spent the weekend learning to punch, eating good food, and completing the rug. At the end of the weekend they had a rug to give to the bride as a group wedding present. The bride and groom even got married standing on the rug!

This is a great idea for a one-day retirement, anniversary, or other special event party as well. At the end of the day, participants can take home the rug and finish it at their leisure.

A note to Amy Oxford from a student:

I want to tell you that I really appreciate the freedom you give students. We can buy what we need and we do not have to buy what we do not need. I really also like having the choice of my design even when I take beginner's classes. You are really a very open person and you welcome comments and questions. You do not feel threatened by students having different opinions or experiences. Although you are the instructor, the learning also takes place through an exange between the participants.
